Many sports that we know today can be dated back to about 3000 years. A lot of these sports were born as a result of preparation for war, training as a hunter or as a pass time. The first Olympic Games were hosted in 776 BC. The Ancient Greek then introduced formal sports to the world.

The basis of modern baseball as we know it today dates back to September of 1845 in New York City. A group of men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club, one of the first known baseball clubs in the USA. Before 1845, there were references of games resembling baseball in the USA, its most direct ancestors appeared to be 2 English games. Rounders, which was a children’s game that was brought to New England by colonists and cricket. Thus, baseball started as a hobby amongst a group of men which later turned into an official sport.

At first, basketball was actually played with a soccer ball. Players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of ‘random’ dimensions as a pass time. Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket. It was not until 1893 that iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced to the game. However, another 10 years had passed until the innovation of open-ended nets put an end to the practice of manually recovering the ball from the basket each time a goal was scored. The first official Converse All Stars basketball shoes were introduced in 1917.

The start of the rugby game can be traced back over 2000 years to a Roman game called harpastum. In this game the ball was also carried in the hands, unlike soccer which was only propelled by means of foot. The rugby game made its modern debut in 1749 at a built school of rugby in England. Between 1749 and 1823 rugby only had a few rules and the ball was kicked rather than carried to move it forward. It was not until 1823 that the player William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it instead of kicking it forward. This was the beginning of the modern version of rugby as it is played today.

Football (soccer):
The history of football can be traced back more than 2000 years to ancient China, where it all began with a number of players kicking an animal-hide ball around. While Greece, Rome, and parts of Central America claim to have been influential to the evolution of the game, it came forward in England during the mid-19th century. It is the English who can be credited for codifying the first uniform rules of the sports like tripping opponent and using arms being forbidden.
